Garage Door Installation, Repairs & parts in Kent, Washington

Have you been thinking about upgrading your garage door? Whether your garage door is on its last legs or you’re simply looking for an upgrade, you must understand garage door sizes. Without this knowledge, you might find that the garage door of your dreams isn’t a good fit for your home — literally.

If you’re not sure what size your garage door is, you’re in good hands. We’ve put together a brief overview of garage door sizes and how to measure a new garage door.

Residential Garage Doors

There are various options for residential garage doors, especially considering you can have single or double garage doors.

How Wide are Single Garage Doors?

Standard residential garage doors typically come in three sizes:

  • 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall
  • 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall
  • 10 feet wide by 7 feet tall

You’ll see garage doors of this size in standard homes. These doors are wide enough to fit an average car, sedan, or SUV. However, if you have a larger vehicle such as a truck or RV, you’ll need to create a custom garage door entrance.

How Wide are Double Garage Doors?

Some homeowners need to choose between single doors or one large double door for their garage entrance. Double doors generally come in one of the following sizes:

  • 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall
  • 14 feet wide by 7 feet tall
  • 12 feet wide by 7 feet tall

The standard size for double doors is 16’ x 7’, as this is enough space to park two midsized vehicles inside your garage comfortably.

Standard Commercial Garage Door Sizes

Commercial garage doors are designed for large spaces such as warehouses or office buildings. They’re created to accommodate large vehicles and trucks. The standard size for a commercial garage door is typically 32 feet 2 inches wide and 24 feet 1 inch wide. To ensure that things will run smoothly as trucks back in and out, some companies will widen the space by a few inches.

How to Measure for a New Garage Door

Before you head out to pick out a new garage door, take the time to measure the door of your garage. Here’s how to do it:

  1. First, measure the width and height of the door opening to get a rough opening.
  2. Then, measure the space to the space needed for the garage door track.
  3. Measure the headroom or distance between the top of the opening and the ceiling.
  4. Finally, measure the distance from the garage door opening to the back wall of your garage to find the backroom. Most garages will need a backroom that equals the height of the garage door with an additional 18 inches.
